Safe Passing South Africa

Safe Passing South Africa

There are calls nationwide for a law that would give cyclists a 1.5 meter buffer. No legislation enacted as yet. The first region expected to act on this is Western Cape. As you can see from the article in the link below, this could happen as soon as mid-year 2013. The effort is tagged with both the motto of “1.5 and stay alive”, and is also referred to as Burry’s Gap. This is in reference to the death of Olympic cyclist Burry Stander, killed on a training ride recently. Safe Passing Survey #003 Groups

Safe Passing Survey #003 Groups

With the exception of a reference to riding two across, most cycling laws are written for cyclists riding by themselves. As we know the scenery changes when it comes to group rides, especially with large groups. These groups, even when acting within the law, can complicate traffic situations, especially on two lane roads. It becomes very difficult and sometimes dangerous for motor vehicles to pass extended groups of cyclists. When these groups go single file (“single up”) as the law requires, this can make it even more dangerous as the length of the line of cyclists doubles. This leads...
