STCC Strava Time Trial
Updated June 2013. This is for Shawnee Trail Cycling Club members only - want to find out how to join? Click here.
We've been asked many times for the club to stage a Time Trial event. Although an official Time Trial takes planning, preparation, coordination with municipalities, licensing and many, many other things - and we wanted any contest we put together to focus on fitness and the enjoyment of being on a bike. So, we thought we'd take advantage of our use of Strava and stage a roaming time trial competition utilizing Strava segments. If you aren't signed up for Strava and want to know how, visit www.strava.com. The basic account is free.
Check out the contest rules. Each month, we'll search Frisco and the surrounding communities for an appropriate segment for you to ride and compete against your peers. The segments will be from 1/2 mile to 10 miles long and will be on segments of road with minimal or no stops and with as little traffic as possible. Remember these are open roads and you must obey ALL traffic laws. Remember that with Strava, this segment can be part of one of your rides or you can travel to the segment and do it by itself, although in our first month there was some harassing of those that did this.
We're back and this month you have something a little different. One of the hidden gems in Frisco. This neighborhood has some nice climbs in it - it's sad it's not suitable for a group ride. The roads are too narrow and there are several blind turns. Perfect though, for one or two cyclists to go test their mettle. We've picked one climb out of several for this month's test. Can you? We'll see... This is Compass Dr from Lebanon Rd to Voyager. Be cautious of the side streets in this neighborhood.
Time off for National Bike Month
Back in town for a nice challenging run west on Virginia from Stonebridge Pkwy to Custer (or almost). The start and finish, allow for a standing start at Stonebridge with room to easily shut down before Custer. Remember, you still have to follow ALL traffic laws while working up a sweat. Enjoy the nice steady climb of this one!
A March COMBO! That's right, the TT for March is a combined time of two sections. Why have I done this? There is a stop sign at Wilmeth and CR124 so to keep everyone within the rules - you cannot break any traffic laws - I've broken this into two sections. You don't even have to do the two at the same time. We'll accumulate the times for your best efforts on both sections during the month to determine the winners. Have fun and enjoy the scenery on the route (and those hills!).
February's TT is a little different. This is our shortest time trial at 1/3 mile, but don't let that fool you. It's a nice, steady climb all the way to the top. This section is also well lit at night, so you can try it anytime. It's close to the meet up point for the Wednesday Night Special - in for some extra work this week? Hope you enjoy it!
Kicking off the new year with a nice TT course in Little Elm. This is a good 1.1 mile stretch of road that a lot of us have ridden at one time or another. It has a couple of small rollers, but for the most part you can check your speed. Enjoy!
A little further south and a bit west for the last month of 2012. Even though this segment is very close to some heavily travelled bike routes, few have ridden this. This month goes east on Windhaven from Castle Hills Rd to Josey. A short but biting climb that should do a good job of waking your legs up. The turnaround and end to the TT is the crossover BEFORE you get to Josey. Give it a shot and get in the running!
We're back south for this month and down to one of our shortest TT routes. If you haven't found this little dream hill, I think you're in for a treat. It's on the eastbound side of Stonebrook Pkwy from the bottom of the hill to the turnaround indicated on the map, giving you plenty of time to sail through and make the final turnaround prior to DNT. This is a great training hill outside of its use as part of our TT. There's a nice loop through the neighborhood (good for 2-3 cyclists, but not for a bigger group) and then climb all the way back to DNT. What else should you note about this? Once Stonebrook Pkwy is completed from Legacy, this will give us a hill very similar to Windhaven, right in our own back yard. Have Fun!!
Fun fact: MapmyRide rates this as a Cat 5 climb. I know, no such thing - only in Texas
As promised, we've got a long TT this month (approx 8.9 miles). Although I'm keeping our TTs off the STCC routes, this one has been used for a race in the past, so is already set up - you're competing ONLY against STCC members (and those of your group). It's a loop just north and east of Celina (check the map).
We've made it through our "trial run" month with a number of people logging time on the August segment. The new segment has been posted. This month you'll be going from Lebanon north to Stonebrook Parkway, a distance of about .9 mi with 55 ft of climbing. This one will be a challenge as it's practically all uphill without much chance to build a run of speed, even though you may watch the weather forecast for a nice tailwind. It is a new section of road, just opened and as such is VERY smooth. I've changed the Strava groups to be open - no more passwords (that seems to be an issue for Strava and how the groups are accessed). Join the group of your peers and start competing. Only September results count - do this as many times as you want, your best time is the only one that matters.
August is our kickoff month, a "dry run" to allow us to evaluate the participation in the event and any modifications to rules and locations that might be necessary. Braggin' rights only this month!
The first segment is located on Panther Creek Parkway, westbound from Hillcrest towards Preston Rd. Plenty of space has been allowed for you to end your ride and u-turn safely before Preston Rd. We suggest, as always, that you ride or drive the segment before your effort. The leaderboard below shows the overall leaders, but click on the "View the Full Leaderboard" to check how you are doing.
You must be a member in good standing of Shawnee Trail Cycling Club
You must log your efforts through Strava, either from your Garmin or through the supplied iPhone or Android application. No manual entries will qualify.
You must request, or have been invited, to join the appropriate STCC Strava Group.
STCC Stampede. Members of this group are cyclists that would normally participate in the Thu Night A Group.
STCC A. Members of this group are cyclists that would normally participate in the Thu Night A Group.
STCC B. Members of this group would normally participate in Thu nights B group and the Express Ride.
STCC C. Members of this group would normally participate in the Thu Night C group and the Sat CPS.
STCC D. Members of this group would normally participate in the Thu Night D group and the Sun T-Rec.
Your effort must be a solo effort, no drafting or team rides. This is done on the honor system, so respect your fellow competitors.
Choose the appropriate group. We've tried to provide some segregations of abilities to enable cyclists to compete against their riding peers and provide everyone from the most experienced to the novice rider a chance to enjoy the contest. Again, the group you request to join is your choice and is on the honor system - but we know who you are. No A riders requesting the D group - PLEASE!
You will have from the 1st of the calendar month to the end to log as many efforts as you like. Only the best effort will be used.
A different segment will be used each month and a link will be posted prior to the beginning of the next month.
Most important rule is that you remember this is supposed to be FUN! Jabs (in jest) at your fellow members are not only allowed, but encouraged
Points of Note
There are no STCC ride leaders for this effort, and as such is not an official STCC group ride. You, as always, are responsible for your own safety and must obey all traffic laws.
We do ask that if you have any questions about the segments or want to report problems with the segment, you email us a email@example.com .
Strava does not endorse or otherwise have any involvement in the organization or conduct of this ride or it's participants. Shawnee Trail Cycling Club members utilize Strava for tracking their fitness against their own performance and that of other club members.
